Amplifying the quiet work: Why creative networks matter more than ever

Amplifying the quiet work: Why creative networks matter more than ever

SUMMARY

In the arts, culture and heritage sectors, we often talk about amplifying voices, of audiences, communities, artists. But how often do we think about our own voices, our reach, our networks? Ticketsolve guide us through what it means to feel professionally connected. Not just visible or known, but amplified. Supported. Heard.

Perhaps because the AMA Conference is one of our favourite networking opportunities of the year, we’ve been thinking a lot about creative networks, about how they form, who they serve, and why they matter more than ever in our sector.

In the arts, culture and heritage sectors, we often talk about amplifying voices, of audiences, communities, artists. But how often do we think about our own voices, our reach, our networks?

Creative professional development is often overlooked. It can feel secondary to programming, delivery, or impact reporting. But in a sector built on people, relationships, and collective imagination, it’s our connections, not just our outputs, that shape the future.

At Ticketsolve, we’ve been thinking about what it means to feel professionally connected. Not just visible or known, but amplified. Supported. Heard.

Networks as Infrastructure, Not Afterthought

Diving into work by those who have explored creative networks¹, we found a consistent theme: networks are doing far more than helping us swap contacts or collaborate on projects.

They’re where knowledge is exchanged, where confidence is built, and where people navigate the emotional demands of working in the creative and cultural sector. While they’re rarely prioritised in strategy documents or funding bids, they shape careers, creative practice, and community connection in invisible but essential ways.

For us, what stood out most wasn’t just the structure of these networks, it was their informality. Many of the most meaningful moments happen outside official settings:

  • A quiet nudge to go for that job
  • A WhatsApp message after a conference
  • A post-panel chat that leads to a future collaboration

These moments don’t always count as “professional development” in a formal sense. But they’re how people stay in the sector. How they grow. How they stay resilient.

So We Made a Resource... with Socks

To celebrate and support that quiet-but-crucial work of connection, we’ve created a new, light-hearted guide, one that brings warmth, humour, and a bit of everyday honesty to how we think about professional development: Best Foot Forward: Getting Your Professional Networking Socks On!

Because sometimes the way we approach networking is a bit like the socks we wear: reliable, bold, mismatched, quietly comforting… maybe even a little well-worn, hidden from sight, or carrying the odd hole. And that’s okay. This guide uses sock “profiles” as a playful way to explore the many ways people connect professionally,  whether you’re stepping out confidently or just testing the waters.

Are you:

  • A Veteran Sock (confident, comfy)?,
  • A Fresh Cotton Sock (new, curious, full of energy)?
  • A Multi-Hatter Sock (juggling many roles with style)?
  • Or a Warm Wool Sock (thoughtful, steady, and values meaningful connection)?

The guide includes:

  • Tips and ideas tailored to each profile
  • Realistic ways to build and sustain networks
  • Gentle encouragement to connect, on your own terms

We hope it helps you amplify what already works, and explore what might help you stretch.
