Dr Jonathan Gunson
Jonathan is a researcher with a particular interest in the cultural sector. He has been involved in a wide range of policy, research, and consultancy projects. These have included on a variety of areas including surrounding cultural policy, arts philanthropy, local taxation and regional policy, visitor and tourism tax, digital skills in the automotive sector, and higher education policy and strategy. His research has included an investigation of arts philanthropy in Europe on a cross-national basis according to its national and institutional characteristics. His current research interests include the political economy, cultural economics and cultural policy, heritage and history, philanthropy, cultural patronage, theology, and politics and policy on both a regional and national level.
Research interests: Cultural policy; public policy; comparative politics; cultural economics; cultural placemaking; the political economy and history of arts philanthropy and arts funding; the relationships between philanthropic and religious traditions; the history of cultural patronage; the history of theatre and the performing arts between the mid 19th and mid 20th Centuries; historical traditions of giving; the third sector; cross-national comparisons; political, historical, and economic geography; the landscapes and geographies of civil society; theology.
