Research and Development

Issue 53 / January 2014

Put some research on your resolutions list. And make sure to carry it on well beyond the New Year. This winter issue of JAM is all about research and development (R&D) and includes articles from authors based in Wales, Poland and the US.

Heather Maitland takes our regular Research Roundup off on a tangent with apologies to the Guardian’s G2 pass notes column to explore R&D while Malgorzata Zamorska shares the research that she did for Kwartludium in Wonderland – exploring a new audience for contemporary music.

Ron Evans and Roger Tomlinson get into a conversation about experimenting every day and offer some hints and tips. Dr Sharon Lockyer writes about research into understanding audiences for live stand-up comedy while Jon Kingsbury and Tandi Williams of Nesta share some insights from the R&D front line.

Nia Williams of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales fills us in on their major redevelopment project and sharing evaluation alongside Alan Brown wondering why the important research in the arts still isn’t being done. Adam Lumb offers some tips for presenting research to boards while Emilia Spitz and Linda Uruchurtu share their thoughts on presenting research to clients. We head to Scotland to spend sixty seconds with Steve Perry of the Usher Hall and back down south to read about Howard’s way in this issue’s Spotlight.
